AndroFeme contains the active ingredient testosterone. This form of testosterone is identical to the testosterone produced by your ovaries and adrenal glands. Testosterone plays an important role in sexual arousal, sexual response, libido, maintenance of bone, energy levels and well-being. When women suffer from a deficiency of testosterone, one or more of these areas may be affected. AndroFeme is indicated for use in hypoactive sexual desire dysfunction or HSDD.
AndroFeme will generally be added only when oestrogen and progesterone therapies are already being used.
Your blood levels will need to be checked after 6 weeks.

How to use AndroFeme

AndroFeme is a cream you apply to clean, dry skin of the lower belly or outer thigh. Massage the cream in, this will take 30 seconds. Wash your hands afterwards. Apply it at around the same time of day and do not use more that is prescribed. Alternating the location of application may reduce the risk of growing darker hairs at the site.

You will need to check your blood levels of testosterone 6 weeks after starting it to make sure the dose is not too high.

The tube comes with an applicator (like a syringe) which measures the dose. Generally you start with 0.5ml daily. To measure the correct dose of cream, gently squeeze the base of the tube until cream reaches the open nozzle of the tube. Insert the tip of the applicator into the open nozzle of the tube so that the nozzle and the shoulder of the applicator are in contact. Invert the tube and the applicator so the cream will flow with gravity when squeezed. Carefully squeeze the base of the tube and at the same time slowly withdraw the plunger of the applicator. The cream will flow into the barrel of the applicator. Do not try to squeeze the cream into the syringe. Fill to the required dose.

Risks of using HRT

Some females using HRT will be diagnosed with breast cancer slightly more often than those not using HRT. The studies showing this were using old style formulations in certain groups of females and the risk is very small. There is no increased risk of dying from breast cancer nor any increased risk of dying from any cause (all cause mortality).

It is not clear whether this is caused by the HRT. It may be that the women were examined more often because they were on HRT, or that early cancers grew more quickly.

Studies show that about one extra case of breast cancer in 1000 women is diagnosed when women use combined HRT – oestrogen AND progesterone (old style non-body-identical formulations of progesterone). Studies show that women using oestrogen alone (without progesterone) have lower rates of breast cancer diagnosis – also about one less diagnosis in 1000 women.

These risks have NOT be demonstrated with testosterone.

Please talk to your doctor about how these risks weigh up against the benefits for you personally.
